Is Media Freedom in Europe under Threat? ...and what can we do about it?

Luisa Chiodi partecipa al lunch event di presentazione dell'European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF). Nel corso dell'incontro esperti di libertà di stampa, giornalisti e ricercatori discuteranno dello stato della libertà di stampa in Europa

Europe has experienced a deeply troubling decline in Press Freedom since 2004: Journalists have been murdered in Ukraine; Greek reporters have complained of police assaults; Dozens of their counterparts in Italy and Macedonia have received death threats; Turkey has made headlines by banning Twitter; Hungary has centralised public media under state control. And the murderous attack on Charlie Hebdo is engraved in our continent's collective memory.

In order to consider these issues and highlight the struggles on the ground, we will bring together experts on press freedom, prominent journalists, and media policy researchers for a discussion.

The event will also present the new European Centre for Press and Media Freedom in Leipzig - a pan-European network supported by more than 30 journalists’ and human rights organizations, investigative centres, academic institutions, unions, media houses and media lawyers. Its aim is to unite and to coordinate a part of the highly fragmented media freedom community and to address media freedom violations.
