In June 2024, the European Union opened accession negotiations with Moldova.
This webinar will explore the findings of the Shadow Report on Media Freedom and EU Accession in Moldova, produced by the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) in collaboration with ActiveWatch and Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa, as part of the Media Advocacy Action for Moldavia (MAAM) project.
Against the backdrop of Moldova’s EU accession process, 2025 has been a crucial year for press freedom in the country. Moldova’s media landscape has faced significant challenges, particularly during the electoral campaign, including foreign information manipulation and sustained political polarisation. At the same time, an accelerated set of legal and institutional reforms aligned with EU standards has contributed to the development of a more pluralistic media ecosystem.
The webinar will examine the current state of media freedom in Moldova, focusing on two key challenges: the use of legal harassment targeting journalists, and threats to journalists’ safety.
The discussion will explore the specificities of the Moldovan context, highlighting recent legislative and institutional progress while addressing the challenges that remain. It will also consider parallels with, and lessons from, similar challenges faced by the Romanian media ecosystem.
These critical issues will be discussed by a panel of media experts and journalists, followed by a dedicated Q&A session. The event will be held in English.
