Bansko, a city open to the world

With just over 13,000 inhabitants, Bansko is one of Bulgaria’s most renowned ski resorts and a winter destination for the entire Balkan region. Nestled at the foot of Pirin National Park, Bansko offers scenic trails, natural hot springs, and a lifestyle in close contact with nature. It is everything it takes to attract those seeking a new balance between personal and professional development, perhaps choosing to work far from the city and office.
The area, however, is not immune to depopulation, a central issue for the future of rural areas in Southeastern and Danubian Europe. This challenge is addressed, among others, by the Danube4Rural.com project, funded by EU cohesion fund, which brings together a consortium from 10 European countries. The goal is to combat rural depopulation by encouraging remote working and a lifestyle connected to nature. The ambition is to develop a transnational governance model by 2027 that will support local communities in attracting digital nomads, remote workers, and innovative businesses.
The experience of Bansko, one of the most interesting locations today in terms of its ability to attract remote workers and digital nomads, can serve as an example for other rural areas on the continent.
