Over the past thirty years, the Western Balkans have been one of the most complex laboratories of democratic transition in Europe: the construction of democratic institutions has clashed with economic fragility, nationalism, and weak rule of law. In this context, civil societies have mobilized in several rounds of protest against the difficult conditions in their respective countries, becoming essential actors of democratic resilience, guardians of civic space, and promoters of a culture of participation. This research project comparatively analyzes the "Flamingo Revolution" in Albania and the student movement in Serbia, focusing on the relationship of each experience with democratic institutions, the rule of law, and the European integration process.
