The aim of the workshop is to provide insights into the daily work of Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa on the themes of memory and media freedom, two key issues for understanding contemporary politics and society in South-Eastern Europe.

The workshop, organised in collaboration with Professor Benedetto Zaccaria of the University of Padua, was offered to students enrolled in master’s degree programs in International Relations and Diplomacy, Human Rights and Multilevel Governance, and European and Global Studies.

The first part of the course provided a theoretical framework on public and collective memory, with particular reference to the events that shaped the history of South-Eastern Europe in the 1990s. The second part focused on case studies of journalists who, due to their coverage of these events, were subjected to threats and intimidation.

During the course, students were provided with both theoretical and practical analytical tools, which they applied in examining specific case studies from different perspectives and using diverse approaches.
