Debate and raising awareness on violations of press freedom in 11 countries have been the aims of the 12 European partners engaged until last January in the project "Safety Net for European Journalists", led by OBC and cofunded by the European Union and the Autonomous Province of Trento.

On January 28th we presented the closing event at the European Parliament during the seminar entitled "Je suis Charlie. Media Freedom in the EU and SouthEastern Europe". All audio-files of the speeches can be found here .

Under attack

In the past few weeks the website and informatics services of Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso have been under a DdoS attack. The raids have reached our server causing dysfunctions. Among other problems, we could not send you our by-weekly English newsletter last week as usual.
The anonymous hackers have established a communication line with our editorial staff through a fake Facebook address, ordering us to cancel from our archive the following articles: Corruption and oil in Azerbaijan, Chechnya, school of corruption, Croatia: HDZ ringed by corruption ahead of the elections, Bosnia: international judges under scrutiny

If the articles disappear, the hackers stated, the cyber attacks will stop. Soon after our servers in Germany and the UK were attacked and turned off, and we received a new post threatening further consequences, i.e. the destruction of all our informatics system.

Over the past 10 years, since we started our work, the guiding line of Osservatorio has always been the interest and right of the reader to a free information. While we apologize for last weeks failure, we wish to inform our readers that we will continue along this way, and will not accept being blackmailed.

Does Turkey belong in the European Union?

The Turkish economy is growing, together with the country's influence in the Balkans, Northern Africa and the Middle East. The recent protests, however, are highlighting issues which in Turkish society remain unresolved: the level of democracy, the freedom of the press and the distribution of wealth. An EU candidate since 1999, Turkey is still waiting. Enlargement fatigue, the scepticism of some EU countries, and fear of its 80 million of inhabitants, the vast majority Muslims, are keeping her on the waiting line. But does Turkey really belong in the European Union? Join the OBC live debate. The debate ends on June 21st
