In the mountains of northern Albania, the herds climb steep slopes exposed to the dry wind. On the pastures of Hamzi, shepherds share the same difficult destiny as the goats they care for. Photo story by Valery Postharov
In Hamzi, as in many other places in the region, forests have been cut down to sell timber. As a result, soils have been subjected to strong erosion and flocks often risk remaining without water. The four shepherds depicted here had to build watering wells along the path to the higher pastures. This is the only way to ensure that the goats continue to give milk. The battle to save one's livelihood is actually a battle to save nature. A battle in the name of life.
