In 2025, Kosovo went through a long political crisis that began with the parliamentary elections on February 9, won with about 42% by Vetëvendosje (the progressive and nationalist party led by Albin Kurti), but without a sufficient majority to govern alone.
For months, parliament remained deadlocked amid failed votes, coalition attempts, and procedural clashes, leaving the country without a stable executive. When even the designated prime minister, Albin Kurti, failed to obtain parliament’s confidence, President Vjosa Osmani called new elections.
On December 28, 2025, Vetëvendosje secured about 51% of the vote, but amid controversy over alleged fraud and a lengthy ballot recount. Finally, on February 11, 2026, the parliament in Pristina approved the new government led by Albin Kurti with 66 votes out of 120, ending a political stalemate that had lasted a year.
