Debate and raising awareness on violations of press freedom in 11 countries have been the aims of the 12 European partners engaged until last January in the project "Safety Net for European Journalists", led by OBC and cofunded by the European Union and the Autonomous Province of Trento.

On January 28th we presented the closing event at the European Parliament during the seminar entitled "Je suis Charlie. Media Freedom in the EU and SouthEastern Europe". All audio-files of the speeches can be found here .

Here the analytic report "Building a Safety Net for European Journalists" by Eugenia Siapera, professor of Dublin City University and the handbook for threatened journalists "Safety Net Manual" published by SEEMO (both free downloadable)

Farewell Dragan

Dragan Janjić passed away on the night between 30 and 31 December. Journalist, bulwark of independent media, founder and editor-in-chief of the Beta agency, former deputy editor-in-chief of the Politika newspaper, vice-president of the Association of Independent Journalists of Serbia (NUNS) and, since 2013, correspondent for OBC Transeuropa.

Over the last few years we have worked together, discussed issues and events, shared our views on critical situations. Last spring, during the lockdown, we spent evenings exchanging information and impressions on what was happening. He always had a good word, a smile, a piece of advice to share.

We will miss you, Dragane. Serbia and the world of media will miss your voice, your comments, your stinging tweets. You left suddenly, leaving everyone breathless. You will be remembered for your fight for freedom of expression, for a world more just and more respectful of human rights. We will remember you as a sincere and honest friend, a valuable colleague, and a keen analyst. Farewell Dragan.

Europe

Over the years, OBCT's efforts have been constantly aimed at supporting, contributing, and participating in a transnational European civil society: looking at the grassroots movements, interacting with European institutions, "feeling" European citizens. In our publishing, analysis, and activist work we have always looked at Europe as a unique opportunity for peace and coexistence.

In these difficult days of coronavirus pandemic, the capacity to give common answers and to feel part of a single project by the European Union member states has seemed to falter dramatically. The historical meaning of what is happening - and the importance of the answers that will be given - is clear to everyone.

That is why in the coming weeks we will continue to follow carefully the difficult ridge between emergency measures and protection of civil rights; we will be keeping our eyes focused on the fate of the most marginalised communities, starting from refugees and migrants, and we will continue to give voice - opposing any propaganda - to the solidarity-based Europe we believe in.
